Essential oils are concentrated extract compounds of plants used in aromatherapy and can be applied to the skin for detox purposes provided they are properly diluted and medicinal grade. The extract of these oils collect the scent and the flavour aka the "essence" of the plant it was extracted from. The oils themselves are made through methods like distillation or cold pressing, it is extremely important to know the chemical process going into the oils that you purchase as many available for purchase that are marketed as essential oils are not pure and can be made with harsh chemicals or just mimic the scents through artificial means. It is also extremely important to understand that essential oil treatments are NOT a replacement for a physicians recommended care and should absolutely not replace any medications or care set out to keep you or your children safe. They are also NOT safe to drink, no matter what anyone tries to tell you!
There are several benefits to Essential Oils and the art of healing through plants goes back as far as our history in many forms. Essential oil benefits are most popular through the use of aromatherapy, which involves diffusing oils through water and steam into the air, cleaning out toxins from the air and stimulating the neurological responses in the limbic system of the brain through scent. The limbic system is directly tied to our behaviours, emotions and long term memory. Essential oils contain many anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that are highly useful for boosting the immune system and detoxification - for example, Vicks Vapor rubs main ingredient (what causes the famous smell) is actually Eucalyptus! A plant used to make the popular oil for cold/flu relief.
Here are some of the reported known benefits of Essential Oils:
- Stress & Anxiety Reduction ( A common oil used to relieve stress & anxiety, as well as improve sleep is Lavender Essential oil. It is a very popular additive to baby bath and bedtime products but should never be used directly on a baby's skin, even when diluted. Dilute well and then add to a baby safe cream or bath)
- Insomnia & Sleep Improvement
- Anti-Inflammatory Response
- Easing Headache & Migraine Tension (Next time your head is in the pits, try a bit of diluted peppermint essential oil on the temples and forehead!)
-Anti-Bacterial & Antimicrobial Properties ( Oil of Oregano is a popular one used for its anti-bacterial properties. Again, this does not mean an essential oil should be used to fight any serious infections or be ingested! This point cannot be stressed enough!)
Raindrop Therapy/Technique: These sessions use a specific combination of medicinal grade, Young Living Oils, that are diluted for topical use. It is a form of treatment using a combination of aromatherapy and reflexology through a gentle application of these oils to targeted points along the spine and feet. This is a non-manipulative treatment and is used to aid in boosting the immune system and aims to relax and realign your body into balance. This technique is often done as a stand alone treatment but makes an amazing addition to a standard Reflexology treatment or to our Chakra Balancing sessions.
